Nairobi National Park
in Golden Light

By 3 PM the hottest part of the day is over. Zebra, giraffe, buffalo and antelope move out of the shade to graze, lions that slept through midday start to stir, and the light turns warm and low—easier on the eyes and on a camera than the glare at noon.

Your guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel at 3:00 PM and enters through the Main Gate. The route works the open grassland first, where the grazers gather as the heat lifts, then the dams, where hippos and waterbirds are busy late in the day. Predators are more likely to be on the move now than at midday, though no game drive can promise a lion.

Choose the afternoon if you land in the morning, have meetings until lunch, travel with children who won’t manage a pre-dawn start, or want photographs in soft light. If seeing predators is your priority, the morning drive gives you better odds.

Afternoon Advantage: Afternoon light is photography gold, temperatures drop significantly, and herbivores return to grazing areas. You avoid the early 5:45 AM wake-up while still accessing prime game zones. Compare morning vs afternoon timing →

Your Afternoon, Hour by Hour

3:00 – 3:15 PM

Hotel Pickup

Your guide collects you in a pop-up roof Land Cruiser. Mid-afternoon traffic on Lang’ata Road is usually light; the drive back meets the evening rush, which is why the timings below leave the park by 6:15 PM.

3:15 – 3:30 PM

Main Gate Entry

Park entry and a short briefing. Your guide sets the plan: grassland first, then the dams, finishing wherever the light over the skyline is best.

3:30 – 4:45 PM

Open Grassland — The Grazers Come Out

The main stretch of the drive. As the temperature drops, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, antelope and buffalo move out of the shade to feed, and lions begin to stir. A cheetah, if one is about, is most likely to be seen now. The light is warm and side-on—good for any camera, phones included.

4:45 – 5:30 PM

Predator Search & Dam Zones

Along the woodland edges and down to the dams, where hippos surface and waterbirds feed. As the evening cools, your guide checks the places lions tend to move through at this hour.

5:30 – 6:15 PM

Return Circuit & Gate Exit

A last loop on the way out, with the sun low in the west and the city skyline behind the grassland—the photograph this drive is known for. Out of the Main Gate by 6:15 PM.

6:15 – 6:45 PM

Hotel Drop-Off

Back at your hotel or any Nairobi address you give us. The Giraffe Centre is closed by this hour, so if you want it too, visit it in the morning or at lunchtime—ask us when you book.

Active Afternoon
Animals

In the afternoon the park switches from rest back to activity. Grazers are easy to find as they feed in the cooler air, and lions are more often seen moving in the last two hours of daylight than at midday. Cheetah live here but are few and shy—treat one as a bonus, not a promise.

What Our Guests Say

★★★★★

“We’d already done the morning tour and wanted to see the park again. The afternoon light was unbelievable — golden, soft, no harsh shadows. The zebras and giraffes seemed more active, and the guide said lions are often on the move by 4 PM. Definitely my favourite light for photos.”

Alexandra M. — Berlin, returning visitor, June 2025

★★★★★

“Coming from a business meeting, the 3 PM start was perfect. No early alarm. The park looked completely different from how I imagined morning safaris. Cooler, more relaxed, better light. I saw cheetahs and a lion pride moving through the grassland.”

James T. — London, business stopover, April 2025

★★★★★

“Our guide said afternoon is actually superior for herbivore viewing because they’re most active then. I saw more animals than I expected in just 3.5 hours. The Nairobi skyline with the setting sun behind everything was magical.”

Keiko & Hiroshi N. — Tokyo, May 2025

★★★★★

“Family with a 7-year-old. The afternoon timing meant no pre-dawn stress. Child enjoyed the cooler air, better animal activity, and our guide spent time explaining behaviour. This felt less rushed than it could have been.”

The Singh Family — Nairobi residents, May 2025

Everything You Need to Know

Is afternoon safari as good as morning safari? +

Different, not worse. The morning drive gives you the best chance of predators still active after the night. The afternoon gives you busy grazers, the softest light of the day and no 5:45 AM alarm. Lions are often moving again from about 4 PM.

Why 3:00 PM instead of earlier? +

Leaving at 3 PM skips the hottest hours, when most animals rest in the shade, and puts you on the grassland for the busiest part of the late afternoon. It also leaves your whole morning free.

Is there a sunset component? +

Not a full sunset. The light turns golden from about 5 PM and you leave the park by 6:15 PM, before dark—so you get the sun low over the skyline, not the sun going down.

Can I combine afternoon tour with Giraffe Centre? +

Yes, but do the Giraffe Centre first. It closes before this safari ends, so plan your visit for the morning or around lunchtime and we collect you from your hotel at 3 PM.

What about rain in afternoon? +

In the rainy seasons (roughly March to May and November to December) Nairobi’s showers usually come in the afternoon. Most pass within the hour and the animals are often out again straight after. In the dry months afternoon rain is uncommon.

What’s the cancellation policy? +

Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure. Between 24–48 hours: 50% refund. Less than 24 hours: no refund. Free date changes up to 24 hours before departure, subject to availability.
