Tour Highlights

Why the Morning Safari Is the Park’s Best Window

Dawn is when Nairobi National Park is at its most alive. Predators are still active from overnight hunting. The savanna floor glows gold in the first light. And you share the park with a fraction of the mid-morning visitor numbers.

🦁
Peak Predator Activity
Lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are most active at dawn — before the heat of day drives them to shade by 10am.
🌅
Golden Hour Light
First 60–90 minutes inside the park offer spectacular low-angle light for wildlife photography.
🦏
Rhino Water Runs
Black and white rhinos move to dams and water sources in the early morning — peak sighting probability window.
🔭
Thinner Crowds
Morning tours enter at gate opening — before the mid-morning surge of self-drive and group vehicles.
🗺
Custom Routing
Your guide checks that morning’s wildlife report, then sequences circuits based on actual current animal positions.
📅
Afternoon Still Free
Back by 11:30am–noon. Add the Sheldrick elephant visit or Giraffe Centre seamlessly in the afternoon.

Your Morning Safari — Step by Step

Every morning tour follows this sequence. Your guide may adjust the internal park routing based on that day’s wildlife conditions — the timing windows below are fixed.

🌙 5:30AM
Hotel or JKIA Pickup
Your guide and private Land Cruiser arrive at your hotel lobby or JKIA arrivals hall at 5:30 am. Pickup is included from any hotel, residence, or apartment within Nairobi city limits. Drop-off location at the end of the tour can be different from pickup — fully customisable. If you need pickup from a location outside central Nairobi, contact us when booking and we will confirm with any applicable transfer supplement.

🎫 6:00AM
Park Entry — Main Gate Opens
You arrive at Nairobi National Park’s Main Gate (Langata Road) as it opens at 6:00 am — the park’s first entry window and the most productive wildlife hour. Your digital KWS entry ticket is scanned at the gate. If you have not yet purchased your ticket, we send you a step-by-step guide and can hold your gate position. Your guide’s driver entry ticket and vehicle entry are both included in the tour price.

🦁 4–5 HRS
Guided Game Drive — Custom Route
Your guide sequences the park’s circuits based on that morning’s conditions: current lion pride position, rhino dam activity, cheetah sightings from the previous day, and water-source predictions. Standard circuits covered include the Western Savannah (prime predator territory), open Athi Plains (giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, cheetah), rhino sanctuary approach roads, and key dams. The pop-up roof stays open for 360° wildlife photography throughout. Pace is entirely flexible — if you find lions, you stay with them as long as you want.

🌤 ~11AM
Exit Park & Return Drop-Off
Most morning tours exit the park between 10:30–11:30 am depending on wildlife activity and guest preference. Your guide drives you to your chosen drop-off point — hotel, JKIA, the Sheldrick Trust (if continuing to the 11am elephant visit), the Giraffe Centre, or anywhere else in Nairobi. Drop-off location is completely flexible and can be confirmed on the day. Back in time for a full afternoon of Nairobi activities.

FAQ

Morning Safari — Common Questions

Why 5:30am pickup — isn’t that very early?
The park opens at 6:00am and the first 90 minutes inside are consistently the most productive for wildlife. Lions are still active from overnight hunting. Rhinos are moving to water. The light is spectacular. A 5:30am pickup from your hotel gets you to the Main Gate exactly at opening. If you find a 5:30am start too early for your group, we can arrange a 6:30am pickup for an afternoon half-day tour instead — though wildlife activity is typically lower in the warmer afternoon hours.
Is the pricing per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle. Your group of 1–6 adults pays the total listed for your group size — not a per-person rate multiplied across the group. So 4 adults pay $320 total ($80 per person), and 2 adults pay $240 total ($120 per person). Adding children does not increase the vehicle cost — it only adds the child’s share on top of the adult total.
How does child pricing work exactly?
Children pay 20% of the adult per-person rate for your group size. Example: 2 adults + 2 children. Adult rate for group of 2 = $120/pp. Child rate = 20% of $120 = $24 per child. Total = (2 × $120) + (2 × $24) = $240 + $48 = $288. KWS park entry fees for children are separate — non-resident children pay USD 40 via eCitizen, independent of our pricing.
Is pickup really included from anywhere in Nairobi?
Yes — from any hotel, Airbnb, residence, or JKIA within Nairobi’s main urban area. This covers all hotels in Westlands, CBD, Karen, Lang’ata, Kilimani, Lavington, Hurlingham, Gigiri, and most suburban neighbourhoods. For locations significantly outside the city (e.g., Thika, Athi River, Kikuyu) a small transfer supplement may apply — confirm at booking. Drop-off can be to a different location than pickup.
Can I connect directly to the Sheldrick Trust visit after the safari?
Yes — and this is the most popular morning tour combination. The Sheldrick Trust’s public visiting window is 11am–noon. A morning game drive finishing at ~10:45am puts you at Sheldrick with perfect timing. We pre-book the Sheldrick visit on your behalf as part of the booking process. If you want to add Sheldrick, tell us when booking — pre-booking at the Trust is mandatory and we handle this for you.
What is the cancellation policy?
Full refund of your deposit if cancelled 72 hours or more before your tour date. Within 72 hours: a USD 35 cancellation fee applies. Within 24 hours or no-show: no refund. Cancel via WhatsApp or email with your booking reference number. If you have booked the Sheldrick add-on, their own cancellation policy applies separately to the Sheldrick admission fee.
Do I need to buy my KWS entry ticket before the tour, or can I do it at the gate?
We strongly recommend buying your KWS ticket the evening before. The eCitizen/KWSPay platform can be slow and requires stable network connectivity — buying it at the gate while the sun is rising and your guide is waiting is stressful and may delay park entry. We send you a step-by-step ticket guide at booking. Full eCitizen ticket guide →
